Through a decisive action, the reigning monarch has formally stripped the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his princely title.
The changes were made official by issuing royal documents under the Great Seal of the Realm, that have been recorded in the UK's official public record.
The entry declared: “The king has been pleased by royal instruments under the Great Seal dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to possess the designation of ‘HRH’ and the honorific status of ‘Prince’.”
A separate record affirmed the stripping of the Duke of York from the peerage list, effective immediately.
It read: “His Majesty has been pleased to direct by royal warrant under his royal sign manual dated 30 October 2025 to direct his government minister to cause the titleholder to be struck from the peerage roll.”
The decision follows mounting controversy over the former prince's connections to convicted child sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, including the release of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
The author alleged that she was assaulted by Andrew after being brought by Epstein, claims that Mountbatten Windsor has consistently denied.
Charles utilized his monarchical powers—accepted rights held by the monarch—following consultation with Cabinet Office officials, instead of through legislative action.
Letters patent and royal warrants are tools of this prerogative, used to bestow or revoke honors and styles.
Because the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.
Following the palace statement, the lord chancellor was directed to prepare the necessary documents for the removal of titles.
The decision also includes Andrew giving up his tenancy on his Windsor residence, a 30-room royal property where he has resided for two decades.
Officials endorsed the monarch's decision.
In spite of the loss of titles, it was confirmed that Mountbatten Windsor will retain his South Atlantic medal, awarded for his service as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
