This global public health agency revealed intentions to reduce its staff by almost a fourth โ amounting to more than two thousand positions โ before mid-2026.
The decision follows after the US, previously the organization's largest contributor, withdrew financial support earlier this period.
Washington was responsible for approximately 18% of the agency's overall budget, causing a substantial financial gap.
Based on organizational estimates, the workforce will decrease from nine thousand four hundred and one positions in early 2025 to approximately 7,030 by mid-2026.
This reduction of 2,371 posts includes staff reductions, employees retiring, and regular departures.
"The past year has been among the most difficult in our existence, while we have navigated a challenging but necessary journey of prioritization and restructuring," stated the organization's director-general.
This Switzerland-headquartered body now confronts a funding gap of 1.06 billion dollars for the 2026-2027 period, amounting to almost a quarter of its required budget.
This amount marks an improvement from a prior estimated gap of 1.7 billion dollars noted in spring.
The financial calculations do not include an additional 1.1 billion dollars in expected contributions from current negotiations with multiple donors.
